Preventing Idle Timeouts on USB Devices

Postby Bradley Cook » Mon Mar 09, 2009 1:42 pm

When experiencing any timeouts (for [[Signature Capture Devices]] in particular) that cause devices to stop functioning correctly after any extended period of idle time, the solution is to adjust the power saving settings on the USB Controller.

* Open '''Device Manager'''
* Browse to "'''Universal Serial Bus controllers'''"
* Right click the "'''USB Root Hub'''" that the device is connected to
* Select "'''Properties'''"
* Click the "'''Power Management'''" tab
* De-select "'''Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.'''"
* Click "'''OK'''"

This will prevent the device from being shut off due to idle timeouts.

== Other temporary solutions ==
* Unplugging the device and plugging it back in after 10 seconds
